Description of the attraction
The amphitheater in El Jem (42 kilometers from Mahdia) was built in the 3rd century and could accommodate up to 30 thousand spectators. Three floors of arcades have survived to this day, stairs and benches have been restored. There is a gallery under the arena with several secret exits to the outside. These galleries contained beasts of prey to fight gladiators.
Now music festivals are held here, concerts of symphony orchestras and jazz festivals are organized.
