Description of the attraction
The amphitheater is one of the most famous architectural monuments in the old part of Pula. Many Croatian cultural and historical sights are associated with the Roman Empire. This Amphitheater was built just during the Roman Empire, in the 1st century AD, when Vespasian ruled. To this day, various film festivals and shows of theatrical performances are held here.
In ancient times, about 23 thousand guests could fit in the amphitheater. This building has survived quite well, but today it is devoid of facing, since the stone was used for other city buildings. Today, you can see the outer facade of the amphitheater, as well as three tiers with a gallery at the top, which overlooks the sea. Lighting of the inner galleries and passageways for guests was provided by arches in the wall.
You can visit the museum, which is located in the underground premises of this amphitheater. Here are the objects of archeology that were found in this area during excavations - various amphoras, as well as tablets with ancient inscriptions.
In the center of the building there is an arena, the size of which is 68 by 42 meters. The main purpose of the arena is, of course, to conduct gladiator fights. The most fierce battles are considered, which took place here during the reign of Diocletian. Then not only gladiators, but also slaves had to fight with wild beasts. Later, in 404, when Christianity was established, such battles were forbidden.
