Description of the attraction
Dongo is a small town lying on the northwestern shore of Lake Como between Gravedona and Musso at the mouth of the Albano River. To Milan - 70 km, to the city of Como - 40 km. It was in Dongo on April 27, 1945 that Urbano Ladzaro and other partisans captured Benito Mussolini and a number of high-ranking fascist officials while trying to cross the Swiss border.
Today Dongo is a quiet coastal town with a number of interesting sights. So, it is worth visiting the majestic Palazzo del Veskovo - the Episcopal Palace, built in the 17th century by order of the Marquis of Cossoni. In 1854, the bishop of Como, Carlo Romano, acquired it, and a century and a half later, the palace became the property of the city municipality. Soon after, the restoration of this grandiose architectural monument began, for which many residents of Dongo donated. Today, the Palazzo del Veskovo, which has retained its historical name, houses the Alto Lario Municipal Music School and the International Piano Academy.
Among the religious buildings of Dongo, one can note the parish church of Santo Stefano, the church of Santa Maria in Martinico and the temple of Madonna delle Lacrimé next to the Franciscan monastery. And, of course, one cannot ignore the Palazzo Manzi, which has been the seat of the city council since 1937. Standing in the main square of Dongo and facing the lake and the old pier, it was built at the beginning of the 19th century for the noble Polti-Petazzi family. Inside, it is richly decorated with frescoes and stucco moldings.
