Description of the attraction
The Lope de Vega House Museum is located practically in the very center of Madrid. This is the house where the great poet, writer and playwright, the brightest star of the Golden Age of Spain, lived for the last 25 years of his life.
Felix Lope de Vega Carpio was born in Madrid in 1562 into a family of artisans. Here he spent his childhood and youth, here the star of his genius lit up. Without graduating from university, Lope de Vega had to leave Madrid. The writer managed to return to his hometown only 10 years later. The writer bought his house in 1610, settled there with his family and lived there until his death.
The house, built in 1578, is a typical example of the Madrid dwelling of this time. In the 17th century, the facades of the building were significantly changed. Currently, the house-museum is owned by the Spanish Royal Academy.
The museum managed to preserve the atmosphere that was there during the life of the writer. Furniture, paintings, books and other interior items are in place. The house contains many of Lope de Vega's personal belongings. In the museum, visitors can enter the study of the great writer, in which he created his literary masterpieces, visit the prayer house, look into the bedrooms of the writer himself and his daughters, into the kitchen and the guest room, stroll along the cozy courtyard with a well and a small vegetable garden.
The Lope de Vega House Museum was opened to the public in 1935. In the same year, it was declared a National Historic Landmark of Spain.
