Description of the attraction

A unique architectural monument of the city of Lviv is "Black Kamenitsa", which has no analogues in Ukraine. The building of Lviv Black Kamenitsa is located on Rynok Square, 4.

An example of residential Renaissance architecture was erected at the end of the 16th century by the famous Italian architects P. Roman and P. Barbon. In 1596 the house became the property of the pharmacist Y. Lorentsovich, who opened one of the first pharmacies in the city and completed the third floor of the house. In 1884. in the building on the site of the attic, another floor was added - the fourth.

The entire facade of the Black Kamenitsa is lined with stone blocks that have the shape of a diamond. On it are the figures of the saints who are the patrons of medicine: St. Martin, St. Floriana and the Virgin Mary.

Initially, the building was not black, but under the influence of precipitation, the sandstone from which the house was erected darkened very much, which is why the building got its name. Now it is specially painted black.

The interior of the house has not undergone much reconstruction. All the same ceilings with transverse beams, columns covered with relief carved ornaments and wide window sills have been preserved in it. Near the entrance there is a small stone ledge and a guard shop. Also, in the back of the house, the originally designed entrance to the chapel was preserved, which was made of alabaster.

In 1926, the building of the Black Kamenitsa, given its high historical and artistic value, was bought by the city, after which, three years later, a museum of the history of the city of Lviv was opened in it. Today, a branch of the Lviv Historical Museum is located here, the exposition of which is devoted to the history of the liberation struggle of the Ukrainian people.

At the present time, Black Kamenitsa is one of the hallmarks of the city of Lviv.
