Description of the attraction
Panagia Katefiani Church is unique - at an altitude of 200 meters on the slopes of Mount Mesa Vuno, the southeastern coast of Santorini, there is a beautiful little white temple. The name “Katefiani” comes from the word “katefio”, meaning “shelter” or “life”. Many people found refuge there in the "hour of evil" - during the eruption of the crater of the deep sea volcano Columbo in 1650.
A small abode on a huge rock in the past was used as a refuge for local residents during a war or pirate attack. Behind the altar there is a small cave with an ancient spring, the water of which is believed to have healing properties.
On September 8, the birthday of the Virgin Mary, solemn events are held in the temple.
It is a truly fabulous place on the path between Perissa and ancient Thira, overlooking the southern coast of Santorini. A breathtaking panorama of the Aegean Sea opens from the platform near the chapel.
