Description of the attraction

"Zanipolo" is an abbreviation of the names of Saints John and Paul, to whom this church is dedicated. It is located in the square of the same name, in the middle of which there is an equestrian monument to Bartolomeo Colleoni, which was cast by Alessandro Leopardi.

The church keeps the remains of famous people of the Venetian Republic. Its construction was started by Dominican monks in 1246 and completed in 1430. The grandiose façade at the bottom is decorated with antique Byzantine reliefs that merge with the ornate Gothic-style marble portal created by Bartolomeo Bon (mid-15th century).

The light interior, in the form of a Latin cross, is divided by ten huge columns into three naves with spacious cross vaults. The remains of 25 doges are buried here, which is why the church is called the Venetian Pantheon. There are some wonderful creations of the Lombardo family and some other famous sculptors here.
