Description of the attraction
Built 250 years ago, the Suomenlinna Sea Fortress (also known as Sveaborg) is the pearl of Finland: a picturesque oasis surrounded by clean sea air, just a 15-minute ferry ride from the city center. Its museum, galleries, restaurants, cafes, parks and coastline attract not just a glimpse, but spend a whole day there, which will remain in your memory for a long time. Suomenlinna is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
By the decision of the Swedish parliament, in the 18th century, construction began on Sveaborg, the most powerful fortress in the entire northern kingdom. The fort, erected to protect the entrance to the harbor near Helsinki, in 1918, together with the independence of Finland, was named Suomenlinna, "Finnish fortress". Separate fortifications are located on six islands near the coast. Four islands form a defensive line, with the former administrative center in the middle. Although in its history the fortress has never been taken by storm, its defenders successfully resisted the Russian army in 1809, and in 1855, during the Crimean War, the fortress came under fire from British ships.
Now on the territory of the fortress there are: the Suomenlinna Museum; Ehrensvärd Museum; Museum of Toys and Dolls; submarine Vesikko; Coastal Artillery Museum; Customs Museum, etc.
