Description of the attraction
The Museum of the Hetmanship is relatively young in Kiev, since it was created in March 1993. The purpose of the Museum of the Hetmanship is to provide a truthful coverage of the history of the Ukrainian state, in particular, the activities of its outstanding personalities. Today the museum is an institution that combines two functions - cultural and educational and research.
The museum itself is housed in an old building erected at the end of the 17th century, the same one that once belonged to such an ambiguous, and nevertheless, outstanding personality like Ivan Mazepa. The building was restored mainly at the expense of a charitable foundation and representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora.
The museum houses permanent historical and memorial exhibitions dedicated to the hetmans Ivan Mazepa, Philip Orlik, Pavel Skoropadsky. The hall dedicated to perhaps the most prominent personality in Ukrainian history - Bogdan Khmelnytsky, deserves special attention. The walls of each of the halls are decorated with paintings by famous Ukrainian artists, as well as portraits not only of the central characters themselves, but also of their associates and contemporaries. There are many archival materials in the Museum of the Hetmanship, for example, the well-known Constitution of Philip Orlik.
In addition to permanent exhibitions, the Hetmanship Museum often organizes mobile exhibitions on various topics. The museum also has its own library, the fund of which has about 2500 books on the Cossack-hetman theme, painting, ethnography, archeography, archeology, numismatics, heraldry, sphragistics, sculpture and other areas. In addition to exhibitions, the Museum of the Hetmanship organizes numerous scientific and practical conferences, discussions, social and artistic events.
