Description of the attraction

The Island of the Dead Dolls is a small island located in the south of Mexico City in the famous Xochimilco area. From afar, the island does not seem remarkable, but if you come closer, you will see that each of its trees is hung with unusual children's dolls.

The island is a creepy Mexico City landmark that attracts horror lovers from all over the world. Here you can hear a variety of mystical stories and superstitions.

The history of the Island of the Dead Dolls originated in the middle of the last century. A hermit named Julian Santana Barrera lived on the island, he grew vegetables on the island, sold them and lived on the proceeds. Further, the legend says that one day he found a child's doll floating in the river. Later he found out that it was a toy of a girl drowned in the river. Since then, the reclusive recluse began to collect children's toys, mostly dolls, and make something like stuffed animals out of them, dressing them up and hanging them on trees, hiding them in the bushes.

In 2001, Santana passed away at the age of 80. For 50 years, he practically filled the entire island with thousands of dolls. Nature also contributes to the exposition of this unusual museum. The plastic burns out and melts in the sun - the more terrifying dolls look, from whose sockets local insects often peep.

To get to the island, you need to explain to the boatman that you need to go there, otherwise he may think that you are ordering a regular walk around Xochimilco. Visiting the island is not recommended for children and faint-hearted adults.
