Description of the attraction
Cathedral of St. The Virgin Mary was built in the middle of the 11th century on the site of an earlier Romanesque basilica. According to legend, Louis the German, the son of Emperor Charlemagne, hunted in these places in 815 and hung the relics of the Virgin Mary on a rose bush, but could not remove them after the hunt … Louis took this sign as a sign from above and ordered to build a church here. A thousand-year-old rose bush still grows in the apse of the cathedral and survived even during the bombing of the 20th century.
The cathedral is decorated with original works of local foundry art - a foundry was opened here during the reign of Bishop Bernward. Here you can see Bernward's amazing bronze column, dating from 1022, depicting scenes from the life of Christ. The bronze doors of the cathedral depict the creation of the world and scenes from the New Testament. The bronze candelabrum of the 11th century with a diameter of three meters and the font of the 13th century, standing on the "four rivers of the Garden of Eden", are also unique.
