Description of the attraction
The Arctic Cathedral is a 720-seat Lutheran church of the Tromsdalen parish, built and consecrated in 1965. It is a unique cultural heritage of Norway, in its shape resembles an iceberg floating in the polar night under the overflow of the Northern Lights.
Cathedral stained-glass windows, the main theme of which is “The Coming of Christ”, are the largest in Europe. In architecture, the symbolic number "3" is used everywhere - as in the altarpiece by the artist Victor Sparre - three rays of light emanating from the hand of God and directed at Christ and the two apostles. The oak interior, large chandeliers, and the pulpit are easily combined with the heavyweight simplicity of the design.
In 2005, a 3-register organ in the French Romantic style was built, consisting of 2,940 pipes. It replaced the old one and is used for divine services and organ music concerts.
While visiting the cathedral, you can buy souvenirs, postage stamps, postcards and various publications dedicated to this arctic temple. When a church service is in progress, the entrance to tourists is closed.
