Description of the attraction
Villanova is one of the quarters of the Sardinian city of Cagliari, located outside the historic center, but no less interesting from that. This and the neighboring quarters were designed and built after the Second World War, but here you can also find cultural and architectural monuments that have become popular tourist attractions and enjoy the colorful landscapes.
In the town of San Lucifero, there is a church of the same name, and nearby is the early Christian Basilica of San Saturnino, one of the oldest temples in Sardinia. Attention is drawn to the snow-white church of Nostra Signora di Bonaria with a monastery - its name recalls medieval legends about shipwrecks and miracles that happened after the happy discovery of the icon depicting the Virgin Mary. In the castle of San Michele and on a hill whose territory will soon be converted into an archaeological park, the history of Cagliari is closely intertwined with the dramatic stories of the aristocrats who once lived here.
The sacristy of the Church of Nostra Signora di Bonaria houses a collection of miniature ships and themed canvases that tell about the sailors' faith in the miraculous deeds of their patron saint. And in the La Vega quarter there are the Museum of Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry and the Museum of Geology, Paleontology and Geography with extensive collections of interesting artifacts.
Villanova and the surrounding neighborhoods can also be interesting for shoppers: in April and May, the pavilions of the Fiera Internazionale international fair open on Viale Diaz, and events such as Turisport, Sardhotel, Christmas Fair, Furniture and Design Fair are held regularly throughout the year.
