Description of the attraction
One of the largest Bulgarian museums, the Regional History Museum, is located in Veliko Tarnovo. Expositions and objects demonstrate all epochs of Bulgarian history: Roman and early Byzantine rule, the Middle Ages, Bulgarian Renaissance, liberation from Turkish slavery, modernity.
The Regional Veliko Tarnovo Historical Museum unites several temples; house-museums (Philip Totyu, Leon Filipov, Petko Slaveikov); several special museums (prisons, Renaissance, modern and contemporary history, archaeological, Sarafkina kyshta, Konstantsalieva kyshta and others); as well as the reserves Tsarevets, Nikopolis ad Istrum and Arbanassi, the Osenarska river complex, the Kilifarevsky historical museum and some other objects.
In the archaeological museum, in chronological order, the exhibits present the entire thousand-year history of this region, as well as its culture. From the Neolithic era - elements of a gold treasure and a unique artifact - the bottom of an earthen vessel, covered with symbols of the preliterate era. The antique period is represented by samples of plastics, ceramics and jewelry. Royal prints and coins belong to the Middle Ages. For tourists who are interested in the Bulgarian history of the period of the struggle for liberation, the prison museum will be of interest. Here, the interior of the punishment cell and several cells in which the revolutionaries were kept has been restored in great detail.
In the architectural and museum reserve Tsarevets, which is located on the hills, the patriarchal and palace complexes have been preserved, the church and bell tower have been completely restored today. At the foot of the hills are the churches of St. Dimitar, St. Peter and St. Paul. Also of great historical and cultural interest are medieval temples of the late period - St. George in Veliko Tarnovo, as well as temples and churches in the village of Arbanassi.
Arbanassi is a famous architectural reserve in which each building has a historical value. There are two monasteries and several churches here.
The unique Nikopolis ad Istrum, a Roman city, was built not far from the site where the modern city of Veliko Tarnovo stretched in the 2nd century. Today its ruins are accessible for visiting.
The many objects of the historical museum in Veliko Tarnovo are due to the rich history of this region. The museum fund is constantly growing.
