Description of the attraction
For tourists wishing to get acquainted with the sights of Bregenz, the Upper Town will be the most informative place for walking. Here, in the historical part of the city, many interesting sights have been preserved; the first buildings date back to the 11th century.
The old Martinsturm tower with a beautiful wooden dome visible from any part of the city is the main symbol of Bregenz. It is known that the rectangular tower was built in the 14th century on an already existing ancient foundation. Martinsturm towers over the streets and squares of the city. The tower acquired its present appearance in 1602; the baroque vault was completed later. The architecture of the Martinstrum Tower is influenced by the Moorish style, as evidenced by the Venetian-style windows and façades in muted colors.
The ground floor of the Martinsturm tower houses the chapel of St. Martin, decorated with Gothic-style frescoes dating from the 14th century. Currently, 30 frescoes have survived. Here, on the ground floor, you can see the image of Christ, the statue of St. Martin, the figurine of the Madonna and Child, as well as portraits of the Montfort family, who ordered the chapel. The chapel is a very popular place for weddings and baptisms. There is unique acoustics inside the chapel.
On the upper floors of the tower, there is a small weapons museum, which contains a fairly extensive collection of ancient weapons, military uniforms and various historical documents. The museum is open to visitors. The tower has an observation deck that allows you to enjoy the panorama of the city of Bregenz and the picturesque lake.
