Description of the attraction

Elsinore is one of the oldest cities in which many attractions are concentrated: ancient churches, museums, ancient houses. Of particular interest among tourists is the Marienlist Palace. The castle was built and named after the wife of King Frederick V, Juliana Maria.

Initially, the building that was on the site of the palace was used by King Frederick II as a hunting and resting place. The author of the project of the hunting lodge at the end of the 16th century was the famous Dutch architect Hans van Steenwinkel. In the middle of the 18th century, the building and the garden were sold to Count Moltke. By the order of the Count, the buildings were rebuilt by the famous French architect Nicolas-Henri Jardin. It was then that the buildings had a modern facade and architectural elements of the palace.

An especially famous building of the Marienlist Palace complex at that time was the monastery of St. Anne. In the 15th century, the construction of the monastery began with a chapel dedicated to St. Anne. Then the chapel was handed over to the Franciscan monks, who turned it into a monastery church, completing the necessary monastery premises around. Unfortunately, until our time, the buildings of the monastery have not survived due to the movement of the Reformation in the 16th century.

By order of King Christian V, the Marienlist Palace was rebuilt in the neoclassical style and the garden and park area surrounding the castle was rebuilt. King Frederick V and his wife Queen Juliana Maria contributed greatly to the modernization of the castle.

The Marienlist Palace is open to visitors. Since 1930, the castle houses the city museum of Elsinore. There are collections of silver cutlery, paintings, sculptures, furniture, etc.
