Description of the attraction
Casa Amalje is one of the three most beautiful Art Nouveau buildings in Barcelona, located in the “Quarter of Discord”, so named because of the great stylistic inconsistencies in the architecture of the buildings located here. Two other equally famous buildings adjacent to Casa Amalle are Casa Batlló by architect Antoni Gaudí and Casa Lleo Morera by architect Domenech y Montarera.
Casa Amalje was redesigned by the architect Josep Puig y Cadafalca. In 1898, this house was bought by the family of the pastry chef Antonio Amalle, and the famous modernist master Puig-i-Cadafalk redeveloped the now famous mansion, its decoration and decoration, which were completed by 1900.
Several architectural trends are intertwined in this luxurious house with an extraordinary facade. The author uses the techniques of Catalan Gothic, which are adjacent to Flemish and Byzantine style elements.
Arches of extraordinary beauty, a stepped pediment, an entrance with two openings of different sizes, wrought iron elements, as well as magnificently executed original bas-reliefs decorating the facade - all this gave the building a unique and luxurious look.
From 1960 to the present, the top floors of the building are occupied by the Institute of Spanish Art, in some of the premises there is a large library. There is a lovely chocolate shop on the ground floor.
By decree of January 9, 1976, the mansion, which once belonged to Antonio Amalja, was awarded the title of National Catalan Historical Monument.
