Description of the attraction
The Holocaust Memorial Museum was opened in Odessa in 2009 at Malaya Arnautskaya, 111. The creation of the museum was initiated by the Odessa Regional Association of Jews. All members of this organization were once prisoners of concentration camps and ghettos.
The main goal pursued by the founders of the museum is to convey to the next generations the truthful information about the tragedy of the Holocaust, to educate a generation of young people who can not only resist fascism, but also prevent its appearance.
The museum funds contain unique information that clearly demonstrates the origins of the birth of fascism, the events that unfolded in Odessa during the occupation. Here you will learn about the formation of Transnistria, and about the terrible mass shootings of Jews that took place in different parts of the city. The Black Books of the Memory of those who died as a martyr in the camps and ghettos are also kept here. The large exposition, consisting of personal belongings, documents, and recorded memories of former prisoners of Transnistria, is striking in its realism and tragedy.
The museum's activities include research work, organizing meetings of former concentration camp prisoners, as well as their saviors - the Righteous Among the Nations. Thanks to creative evenings and book presentations, educational work is carried out among students and pupils. In addition, by the efforts of the museum workers, lists of the dead are being compiled, and new places of mass executions of Jews are identified and investigated.
A visit to this museum makes everyone think about the value of human life, understand the full depth of the tragedy, when a mass targeted extermination of an entire people was carried out, try to understand the cause of such terrible events.
