Description of the attraction

The small colonial-style mansion Casa de Tostado, whose name translates as the House of the Order Ribbon, is located on Calle Arzobispo Merigno in the historic center of Santo Domingo. At the moment, this mansion has been turned into the Museum of the Dominican Family of the 19th century. The purpose of creating this institution was to popularize the history and customs of the Dominican Republic among local residents and visiting foreigners.

Casa del Tostado was built in 1503 and named after its owner - Eskribano Francisco de Tostado. At first glance, it may seem that this house is like two peas in a pod similar to other colonial mansions: white walls, which are simply necessary in a country with a hot climate, an almost flat tiled roof, an open terrace in a turret above the main entrance. However, architecture connoisseurs will certainly notice the double Gothic window above the central portal. Surprisingly, but true: you will no longer find Gothic windows in any house on the territory of both Americas.

The Museum in the House of the Order Ribbon was opened after the 1973 restoration. Exhibits for him were collected throughout the country. Here are personal items, furniture, documents, photographs, paintings, bronze candlesticks, porcelain trinkets and dishes that belonged to families from different parts of the Dominican Republic. Among the paintings on display in the museum of the Dominican family, you can see real masterpieces painted by the most famous local artists of the 19th century. In addition, the museum has a large exhibition of arts and crafts.
