Description of the attraction
In the very center of the island of Corfu, 12 km from the capital of the same name, there is a small village of Vatos. It is located on the slope of Mount St. George. The huge green valley known as the "Ropa Valley" surrounding the village was once a lake that has dried up over time. This valley occupies the imposing central part of Corfu.
Today the river Ermones crosses the valley, creating small picturesque lakes. The abundance of lush greenery and the availability of water create an excellent habitat for different species of birds, animals and fish. The vast green meadow is a great place to graze sheep. But mainly olive trees and grapes are grown here.
Just a short drive from the village are the famous beaches of Corfu, considered some of the best in Greece. The most popular among them are Glyfada, Pelekas, Mirtiotissa.
The famous Corfu Golf Club is located in the Ropa Valley. This club was designed by a world-renowned Swiss architect - Donald Hariden - and meets the highest international standards. The golf club is considered to be one of the best in Europe.
Tourism is not very developed in this area and there is no large crowd of people, so it is perfect for lovers of a quiet secluded holiday. Nevertheless, the proximity to the capital will allow, if desired, not to break away from civilization and visit all the significant historical sights and museums of the island. There is also an excellent water park just 5 km from the village of Vatos.
In Vatos, you can stay in small, cozy hotels or comfortable apartments. There are also shops, cafes and cozy taverns with excellent local cuisine in the village.
