Lake Apolakkia

Description of the attraction

The Apollakia dam was built in 1987 near the village of the same name. Originally intended solely for irrigation, the resulting lake has gradually developed into a significant wetland and site for the tourism and entertainment industry.

Picturesque coastal beaches and expanses of water are the habitat of the caretta turtle and monk seal, as well as a wintering place for migratory birds. The unique climate of the lake was formed as a result of preserved cedar thickets on the shores, olive groves nearby and sand dunes. On the shore there are picnic tables and small wooden houses to accommodate visitors.

The dam is ideal for sailing and is a wonderful walking area. Numerous sporting events, wine and watermelon festivals are held here every year. Rowing and sailing competitions are held in August.

A memorable attraction on the lake is the small church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which plunges into the water as the lake rises. Near the Apollakia dam is the stone monastery of Agia Georgis o Vardas, built over an old Byzantine church. It was erected in 1289 during the time of Andronicus Palaeologus; the church became famous for its wall paintings and icons. These are one of the most important post-Byzantine monuments in Rhodes.

An excellent panorama of Fourni beach opens from the hill near the temple.
