Description of the attraction

The Botanical Garden of Asuncion is called the lungs of this city, because it covers an area of 110 hectares. Most of it is a natural forest with centuries-old trees. In the middle of the 19th century, on the site of the botanical garden, there was the estate of Carlos Antonio Lopez, President of Paraguay, who ruled from 1842-1862. In 1896, Lopez's descendants sold the land to the bank. More than 20 years later, a botanical garden was founded here, the founders of which were German scientists Carlos Fribig and Anna Hertz. After a while, they opened a zoo here in order to be able to observe animals in their natural habitat. Currently, the land on which the botanical garden is located belongs to the municipality of Asuncion.

Several attractions can be found in the park. First of all, this is the botanical garden itself, where rare and endangered plant species from all over the country were brought. The locals call the park Mini Paraguay because of this. An important part of the botanical garden is the nursery - the pharmaceutical garden, where about 500 species of medicinal plants grow.

In no case should you miss the zoo, which contains about 70 species of mammals, birds and reptiles. The stars of the local zoo are considered to be cute tagua - small pigs. Scientists believed that they had lost representatives of this species forever, but in the 80s they found them in Paraguay.

The old mansion that belonged to President Lopez is now recognized as a Historic Landmark and has been converted to the Natural History Museum. Nearby are the golf courses belonging to the golf club of the capital of Paraguay.
