Description of the attraction
To the west of Elephantine Island is the Aswan Botanical Garden, often referred to by its old name, Kitchener's Island. These lands belonged to Lord Horatio Kitchener in the 1890s, when he was in command of the Egyptian army. A passionate lover of nature, palms and flowers, Kitchener ordered to arrange a botanical garden throughout the island, bringing plant samples from India, the Far East and parts of Africa. The total area of the park is 6, 8 hectares, it is home to a wide variety of birds and hundreds of species of flora. Soon after the owner left the island, the land was returned to the Ministry of Irrigation.
There are three entrances to the park, the central one is located on the northern tip of the island, where you can also buy tickets. The best way to see the botanical garden in its entirety is to walk from the main entrance along the entire length of the island to its southern edge. The path will be easy and pleasant, the whole park is divided into 27 identical squares with intersecting paths, which makes it look like a chessboard.
The best way to get to Aswan Botanical Gardens is by renting a local felucca boat or motorboat on the east bank of the Nile. For
in order not to return on foot through the park, ask the boatman to wait for you at the southern outskirts.
Kitchener's Island is a popular family destination for weekend and Friday picnics. If you want peace and privacy, then it is better to plan a visit to the park on other days.
