Description of the attraction

An amazingly beautiful place - Cape Suuk-Su - is located between the city of Gurzuf and Mount Ayu-Dag on the territory that belonged to the international children's center "Artek". Translated from the Crimean Tatar name of the cape means "cold water".

At the base of Cape Suuk-Su you can see the famous Pushkin grotto. Near it there is an azure bay, which amazes with its shape and purity of water. The bay is located in the enclosure of rocks, now known as "Shalyapin's Rock" and "Pushkinskaya Rock". Russian chamber and opera singer F. I. Chaliapin dreamed of building a palace here for talented youth. Unfortunately, the singer's dreams did not come true due to the revolution and civil war.

The upper part of the Suuk-Su cape is decorated with an ancient gray watchtower, which is located on the territory of the Artek ICC. According to historical data, the tower existed here already in the 6th century, at the time of the arrival of the legionaries of the Byzantine emperor Justinian in these lands. It is also very often called the "Giray Tower" in honor of one of the owners of these lands, or "Eagle's Nest" - a tower hanging on the edge of a cliff resembles a nest in its appearance. An observation deck was arranged on the tower, from where a picturesque panorama of the Shalyapin Rock, Ayu-Dag and Adalary opens. Nearby on the site is a small monument to the famous Russian poet A. S. Pushkin. On the eastern side of the tower, there is a marble plaque with embossed lines from Pushkin's poem Farewell, Free Element.

Cape Suuk-Su is also a medieval burial ground of the 6-10th century. In the 20th Art. N. Repnikov excavated the main part of the burial ground. Then it turned out that burials 6-7 st. carried out in crypts and undercut graves, in 8-10 st. the graves were slabs. The medieval burial ground got its name from the Suuk-Su cape, on which it is located.
