Description of the attraction

The center of the cultural and political life of the Greek city of Patras is undoubtedly the George I Square, named after the second king of Greece (1863-1913). The square is located in the very heart of the city and it is one of the most popular places, both among residents of the city and its guests.

One of the most famous sights of the city, the Apollo Theater, is also located on George I Square. The theater building was designed by the famous German architect Ernst Ziller, who also designed the famous National Theater of Greece in Athens. The Apollo Theater in Patras is, in fact, a miniature copy of the world famous La Scala in Milan. Construction of the theater began in February 1871 and was funded by the civil society, which included many prominent political and public figures. Already in October 1872, the theater opened its doors to visitors.

The Apollo was built in the neoclassical style typical of the 19th century. This is one of only three neoclassical theaters in Greece that have been perfectly preserved to this day.

Since its inception, the Apollo Theater has always played an important role in the cultural and social life of the city. From the stage of this magnificent theater, amazing works by Verdi, Bizet, Puccini and other brilliant composers sounded. Many eminent theatrical troupes of Greece also performed here. Since 1988, the theater has been the main stage for the Municipal Regional Theater in Patras. As part of the famous annual Patras Carnival, it also hosts the Bourbulia Masquerade Ball. With the assistance of the theater administration, various educational programs, seminars are organized with the aim of raising the cultural level of the population, and there is also a special workshop for children and adolescents.

Today the Apollo Theater is recognized as an important historical monument and is one of the main architectural gems of the city of Patras.
