Description of the attraction
Dark Garden is the oldest park in Narva. This is one of the favorite places among locals and tourists alike, great for walking and relaxing. The Dark Garden is an example of landscape architecture of the 19th century. The park is located on the Victoria bastion, which by the end of the 19th century. lost its defensive significance. This fortification, located on the banks of the Narva River, is the most powerful bastion of the city. The maximum height of the outer wall is 16 meters. This fortification was badly damaged during the Northern War, however, it was subsequently rebuilt by the Russians.
The Dark Garden contains trees over 100 years old. The park has a monument erected in 1853. The monument is a cast-iron cross, installed on a stone pedestal, as a memory of the Russian soldiers who died during the Great Northern War in 1704 during the assault on the city of Narva. There is also a mass grave in the park, symbolizing the fallen soldiers during the 1918 War of Independence. There is one more sculpture in the park that you should definitely see - this is the "Swedish lion", installed as a memory of the battle between the Russians and the Swedes near Narva. The battle took place in 1700 between the troops of the Swedish king Charles XII and Peter I. The Swedish lion was installed in 1936. In November 2000 it was restored and reopened. This sculpture is located on the top of a hill with a wonderful view of the river.
