Description of the attraction

Maria Wörth is a city located in Carinthia, on a peninsula, on the southern bank of the Wörthersee, about 14 km west of Klagenfurt. The area extends into hilly terrain with a lot of forests. The population of Maria Wörth is about one and a half thousand inhabitants.

Around 875, a church was built on the highest point of the peninsula, where the relics of the martyrs Primus and Felicianus were buried. Bishop Otto Freising built a second small church in 1146-1150, which was consecrated in 1155. Both churches were burned down in 1399, but later rebuilt.

Maria Wörth is the center of Austrian and European summer tourism; about 300 thousand people come here every year. The main attractions of the city include: the former monastery church of St. Primus and Felician, which is located at the highest point of the peninsula. Today, the church is very popular with grooms and brides - many seek to hold a wedding ceremony in such a beautiful and romantic place. The second church is located in the western part and is surrounded by a small cemetery. The interior of the temples is decorated with preserved ancient frescoes.

Reifnitz Castle is located nearby on a promontory, on the northern edge of the bay of the same name. It was built at the end of the 12th century, but only its central part and tower have survived to this day.
