Description of the attraction

Among the sacred buildings of Acapulco, a special place is occupied by the Cathedral, consecrated in honor of the Lady of Solitude. The Spanish name of the temple sounds very poetic - the Cathedral of Nuestra Senora de la Soledad. Its amazing architecture immediately attracts attention. On either side of the main building are four imposing Byzantine-style towers.

The history of the temple is very unusual and begins in 1555. Then on the site of the modern cathedral, located on the main square of Acapulco, a small church was built, which the townspeople loved very much. Over time, it fell into disrepair, and numerous earthquakes contributed to its destruction. At the beginning of the 20th century, a massive cathedral was built on an empty site, which was the victim of the 1909 earthquake. Patient townspeople again dismantled the ruins and for a while forgot about the improvement of the square. In the 30s of the XX century, the local authorities decided that the Old Town needed a cinema, so instead of sacral buildings on Zocalo Square, they planned to build an entertainment center. For some reason, the mayor and his advisers changed their minds, and the current Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad was built here. Federico Mariscal was appointed the architect of the church. In 1958, the cathedral became the main temple of the Archdiocese of Acapulco.

Decorated in a romantic oriental style, the temple is famous for its interior, which is dominated by golden and blue hues. Huge stained glass windows provide good lighting. In the bright rays of the sun, the rich frescoes on the ceiling look especially interesting. The dominant feature of the temple is the glass sarcophagus, which houses the statue of Jesus Christ.
