Description of the attraction

The Bulgarian town of Kavarna is located on the sea coast. It is believed that the area is the most ecologically clean, therefore, it was in the Kaliakrensky Bay that a mussel farm “Dalboka” (“Deep”) was opened. The farm was created in 1993, its specialization is the cultivation and production of the Black Sea mussels Muthilus Gallaprovincialis, ecologically clean and suitable for human consumption (about two to three thousand tons are harvested per year).

The Dalboka farm is the largest enterprise of this profile in Bulgaria. It occupies an area of slightly less than 160 hectares and is located five hundred meters from the coast. This place is home to a large amount of plankton in the water, which is crucial for the construction of a mussel farm. The territory is surrounded by vertical cliffs that lead towards the pebble beach. There are no other buildings in this area. The farm itself resembles an oil platform in its appearance, in addition, large sewage treatment plants have been erected here.

Mussels grow to the standard size of 4 centimeters in about 18 months. These mollusks have a very high nutritional value, nutritionists have dubbed mussels a source of vigor - they contain special amino acids, enzymes that improve digestion, strengthen the vascular system, and more than 30 micro and macro elements. The Romans necessarily added mussels to the diet of wounded soldiers to restore strength.

Excursions to the mussel farm are organized for tourists. Anyone can taste mussels at the Dalboka restaurant, which offers a menu of about 60 dishes prepared exclusively using these mussels. This even applies to desserts. In addition, a beautiful sea view opens directly from the restaurant.

Since 2003, in Kavarna, at the beginning of September, a festival of mussels and fish has been held; guests are treated to a variety of seafood dishes and beer. In addition, concerts and dances are held in the central square to create a festive atmosphere.
