Description of the attraction
Kolossi Castle was built in the XIII century, but already in the XV, namely in 1454-1455, some time after the Knights Templar settled there, it was almost completely rebuilt. Then this fortress was a whole complex of fortified structures, almost all of which have survived in fairly good condition to this day.
Its territory, surrounded by a protective moat, can be accessed via the drawbridge, which is traditional for such buildings. Also there you can still see and visit one of the key elements of the fortress - a three-story tower, which rises 25 meters above the surrounding area. And on the facade of the castle you can still see the family coats of arms belonging to the Lusignan dynasty, as well as the coat of arms of Jerusalem, which this family owned for some time. In addition, one of the main attractions of Kolossi is the sugar factory, which at one time was one of the best on the entire island, but at the moment, unfortunately, almost nothing remains of it. It was there that the Templars established the production of the famous Commandaria wine, which is considered one of the most elite wines in the world.
Kolossi Castle, despite its relatively small size, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Limassol. This place is a must-see for those who want to feel the charming atmosphere of antiquity, as well as enjoy a beautiful view of the old part of the city.
