Description of the attraction
The South Karelia Art Museum, housed in a former artillery barracks built in 1798, was reopened after restoration in the fall of 1965.
The neoclassical building with round vaults is in perfect harmony with the well-known works of famous Finnish artists and other artists of the mid-19th century on display. until now. Particular attention is paid to the exhibition dedicated to the modern art of southeastern Finland, which developed rapidly in the 60s of the last century. Every year, every season, museum exhibitions are updated. It also exhibits paintings and graphics by young Finnish artists.
In addition, the Art Museum of South Karelia has a large collection of folk art exhibits dating back to the 18th century. Occasionally, the museum even holds offsite exhibitions that are interesting not only for tourists, but also for local residents who want to get better acquainted with the traditional culture of their country.
