Description of the attraction

The secrets of the underwater world have always attracted people. There is nothing strange in this: more than seventy percent of the surface of our planet is covered with water, and more than half of all vertebrates live in water. Watching how they behave in their native environment - what could be more interesting ?! It is not surprising, therefore, that more and more new aquariums (aquariums) began to open on all continents and in various countries - a kind of underwater museums, where living inhabitants of rivers, ponds, lakes, seas and oceans are exhibited as exhibits.

The Oceanarium of St. Petersburg is a project unique for Russia, designed by the Finnish architect Hanu Laitila, one of the constituent parts of the Planet Neptune shopping and entertainment complex. The Oceanarium was opened on April 27, 2006. Since then, over two million people have become its visitors, both Petersburgers and city guests coming from different cities of Russia and abroad.

The Oceanarium exposition consists of seven sections, formed depending on the region of habitation of the exhibits presented in them: "North-West of Russia", "Rocky Coast", "Coral Reef", "Tropical Forest", "Main Aquarium", "Amazon Basin", "Zone of the tides". Currently, they contain about five thousand specimens of fish and aquatic invertebrates belonging to 150 different species.

The total area of the Oceanarium premises, located on three levels, is more than five thousand square meters. It houses 32 aquariums with a total volume of over one and a half million liters of water. The smallest holds 300 liters. To fill the largest aquarium, 750 thousand liters of water are needed. And, undoubtedly, it is the most interesting object of the underwater museum, because a 35-meter transparent tunnel has been laid through it, through which visitors can move along a moving path. The walls of the tunnel are made of 8 cm thick acrylic glass, so you can not be afraid of shark jaws, which may be very close to you.

The brightest moment of visiting the aquarium is the unforgettable shows with sharks and seals held here almost every day.

A training center has been organized at the Oceanarium, one of the main areas of work of which is the environmental education of the younger generation.

The Oceanarium is a place where you can spend time with great benefit with the whole family. You can go here again and again, and there is always something new, as the exposition is constantly replenished and changed.
