Description of the attraction
The University of Coimbra was founded in 1290 and is considered one of the oldest universities in the world, in which the educational process has never stopped, since the very first day of its foundation. The university is also considered the oldest university in Portugal, one of the largest higher education institutions and major research institutions in the country. The university has eight departments that produce bachelors and masters in arts, humanities, social and natural sciences, mathematics, sports and technical sciences. The university also has doctoral studies. The university has approximately 20,000 students from all over the world.
The university was founded by King Dinis of Portugal. Initially, the educational institution was located in Lisbon, the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Medicine, Law and Church Law were created. However, the university soon moved to the city of Coimbra, in particular, due to conflicts between students and residents of the city. The university moved to Lisbon several times and finally settled in the building of the royal palace of Coimbra in 1537. The university has its own logo, each faculty has its own official color.
On the territory of the university there is the famous Juanin library - near the chapel, built in 1724. The library is located in three large rooms and contains about 300,000 books. The university has five main campuses. There is a chapel of Saint Miguel, built in the Manueline style. It is noteworthy that the chapel was built over several centuries. Inside the chapel, there is an 18th century organ; its walls are decorated with azulezush tiles.
