Description of the attraction
The quiet village of Galata is located in the picturesque Solea Valley, surrounded by the Troodos Mountains, in the Nicosia district, just over 60 km southwest of the city. The village was built on two banks of the Clarios River at once many centuries ago.
This place is one of the favorite resorts of tourists coming to Cyprus, and especially the Cypriots themselves love it, since the temperature in the summer months there is not as high as in the rest of the island. In addition to enchanting landscapes, lots of greenery and fresh clean air, Galata has a huge number of attractions that are worth paying attention to. There are six churches there, including the churches of the Archangel Michael and St. Sozomenos, as well as the ancient temple of St. Paraskeva, famous for its wonderful frescoes. In addition, some of these buildings are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, for example, the famous Panagia Podit Church, created in the 16th century.
The houses of local residents are no less interesting than the buildings of ancient times - they are an amazing mixture of styles and give the village a special charm. Their distinguishing feature is the abundance of details - carved wooden shutters, neat balconies and ladders, patterns lined with multi-colored tiles, graceful columns and beams, bright conical roofs. In addition, it is worth visiting the local folk art museum, where you can see things that tell the history of Galata: works of local craftsmen, household items, books, clothes and much more.
Galata is also known as the place where the best fruits and berries on the island are grown - various varieties of apples, peaches, grapes, cherries, plums and so on.
