Description of the attraction
Mithimna, or Molyvos, is a city on the northern coast of the Greek island of Lesvos. It is located just a few kilometers from the city of Petra and about 60 km from the administrative center - the city of Mytilene.
The results of archaeological excavations show that a settlement on the lands of modern Mithimna existed in prehistoric times, but, unfortunately, there is practically no reliable information that would shed light on this period in the history of the ancient city. However, it is known for certain that in the archaic period Mithimna was already a large city with extensive trade ties in the ancient world. An ancient legend says that the city received the name "Mithimna" in honor of one of the daughters of the king of Lesbos Makarey, while the name "Molyvos" appeared at the end of the Byzantine period.
Today Mythimna is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful cities not only on the island of Lesvos, but throughout Greece. This is an incredibly colorful, harmoniously combining styles of different eras in its architectural appearance, a settlement with narrow cobbled streets climbing the slopes of a steep hill, the top of which is crowned with a well-preserved old fortress, pretty tiled stone houses and a picturesque harbor with various fishing boats.
Mithimna is a popular tourist and cultural center of Lesvos and is famous for an abundance of various events (exhibitions, festivals, theater performances, conferences, etc.), many antique shops, art galleries, souvenir shops, jewelry and craft workshops and, of course, excellent restaurants and taverns where you can relax and enjoy traditional Greek cuisine.
