Description of the attraction

In the central part of the Aegean Sea there is one of the most picturesque islands of the Cyclades archipelago - Mykonos. The island is famous not only for its magnificent beaches, but also for the huge number of church buildings, of which there are about 400.

One of the most famous and beautiful temples of Mykonos, the Church of Panagia Paraportiani, is located in a picturesque place by the sea. Its name, translated from Greek, literally means "the Mother of God at the gates." This name is probably not accidental, since in reality the church was built at the entrance to the medieval fortress, which, unfortunately, has not survived to this day. The peculiarity of this amazing architectural structure is in fact that it consists of five small churches, which were completed next to and on top of existing buildings.

The center of the temple complex was the Church of Agios Estafios, the construction of which began in the second half of the 15th century. Over time, three more churches were erected around the main building - St. Sozontas, St. Anargyri and St. Anastasia. Together, they became the foundation for the fifth building - the Church of the Virgin Mary, the construction of which was completed in the 17th century. In 1920, a global renovation of this stunning architectural ensemble was carried out.

The snow-white church of Panagia Paraportiani is one of the most photographed landmarks and one of the most famous architectural structures in Greece. The church is located in the historical part of the town of Chora in the Kastro region and is the hallmark of Mykonos.
