Description of the attraction

The Carmelite Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built in the city of Mstislavl in 1637 for the Carmelite monastery instead of the former wooden church. The Ascension Church of the Carmelites was built on the high Castle Hill. It was he who first "meets" the traveler on the road to Mstislavl.

In 1746-1750 the dilapidated building was reconstructed. The reconstruction work was undertaken by the architect Johann Christoph Gaubitz, one of the creators of the Vilna Baroque style, the most popular architect of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. He built and reconstructed most of the Catholic churches, achieving the greatest expressiveness and national flavor of religious buildings.

For the Carmelite church, Johann Gaubitz rebuilt the facade decor and changed the shape of the roof. The temple, while remaining in its former shape, acquired the lightness and grandeur characteristic of the Vilna Baroque style. In 1750 it was consecrated again in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1887, the temple was again subjected to reconstruction and renovation.

In Soviet times, the temple was closed. It stood empty and dilapidated, which, of course, affected its condition. In the early 1990s, the current authorities began to reconstruct the Catholic shrine. Despite the deplorable state and the reconstruction of the temple that has been going on for more than 20 years, you can still see magnificent frescoes by old masters in it. About 20 frescoes on musical and battle themes have survived. It remains to be hoped that the reconstruction of the temple will be completed in the near future.
