Description of the attraction
At the end of Venturska Street, opposite the luxurious Palfi Palace, there are two high-rise buildings, to one of the balconies of which the state flag is attached. The first university in Bratislava and the whole of Slovakia was founded here, in which the humanities were taught. It happened over 500 years ago. This educational institution was named Istopolitanaya. This word is an adjective and comes from the Greek term "Istropolis", which in translation means "The city standing on the Ister (as in ancient times the Danube was called)". For the opening of the University of Bratislava, one should thank King Matthew I Corvinus.
The university consisted of four faculties and graduated doctors, lawyers, theologians and philosophers. The teaching was organized at the highest level, as professors from Austrian, Italian and Polish universities worked here. The famous scientist Johann Müller taught mathematics and astronomy here for five years. Both students and teachers could use the richest library collected by local holy fathers.
Istropolitan's educational institution flourished during the life of the founding king. When he died, funding was not continued, so after 30 years of operation, the university was closed. For a long period of time, no one was interested in these buildings. Only in our time did the city magistrate remember that the first university in Slovakia was located here, and donated the historical buildings to the Academy of Theater and Music Arts. Therefore, after 5 centuries, the voices of students are again heard here.
