Do you like visiting unusual places? If so, then you must like the ship museums. There are several such museums in our country. In this article, we will cover some of them.
Aurora
Almost every Russian has heard about the cruiser bearing this name. But not everyone knows that it is currently a museum. It is located in St. Petersburg. On board you can see exhibitions dedicated to the wars of the 20th century.
The fate of ships, like the fate of people, is very different from each other. The history of this cruiser in the 20th century was very turbulent. The first stage was difficult: during the construction of the ship, there was not enough steel, then the hands … The fact is that at the same time several other ships were being built. Who would have thought that the most famous of them would be this one, who was considered minor!
It is interesting that the name of the cruiser was given by the Russian emperor. He could not even imagine that a volley from the side of this ship in a few years will play such a role in the history of the country! As you know, this shot marked the beginning of an important stage in the October Revolution.
But the first years of the ship's existence were by no means heroic. It seemed like a loser ship. Breakdowns followed one after another. Repair was almost constantly required. I even remember a phrase from a popular cartoon: "Either the paws ache, or the tail falls off." And during the Russo-Japanese War, he was badly damaged by shelling.
Today, only museum displays on board remind of its turbulent past.
Krasin
This icebreaker has an equally glorious history. Thanks to him, the Italian explorers of the Arctic were saved at the beginning of the 20th century. The airship they flew crashed. The Italians became prisoners of the icy desert. Slow death awaited them. But a Soviet icebreaker came to their aid. He managed to break through to the Italians through all the ice barriers.
During the perestroika years, the history of the ship was much less glorious. There were no more voyages, and the crew mostly drunk on board. But, fortunately, those sad days are now behind us.
Today the ship has become a museum. It has been recently renovated. You can see him in St. Petersburg.
Knight
This Kaliningrad ship-museum has a completely different fate. Unlike the aforementioned two ships, he was never a military man. It was created for other purposes.
On his account - more than 60 scientific flights. This is a research ship. He made a significant contribution to the study of the Mariana Abyss (as they call the deepest ocean trench in the world). And thanks to him, a new type of living creatures was discovered, now called pogonophores. These are unusual marine animals that live inside special pipes. These durable tubes are composed of chitin.
Today, there is a very interesting exposition on board the ship. It is dedicated to the exploration of the ocean.
Here are some of the characteristics of the vessel:
- displacement - about 6,000 tons;
- speed - 14 nautical miles per hour;
- board height - about 9 m;
- length - 109.5 m.
Having visited the museum ships, you will learn a lot of interesting things about the history of the country, about the world around us. You will literally touch the glorious past. The sides and masts of these ships seem to keep memories of exploits and amazing discoveries.
