The capital of Sweden is one of the most beautiful cities in Northern Europe. What to visit in Stockholm is not a question, because in the main city of the country there are worthy museums, buildings with a long history, monuments and cultural attractions.
And Stockholm also has a vibrant nightlife, many clubs and restaurants, great shopping. And as everyone remembers from the famous fairy tale by Astrid Lindgren, amazingly tasty buns and coffee that can be tasted in one of hundreds of small and cozy city cafes.
Sightseeing districts of Stockholm
Stockholm has a beautiful definition - “city on water”. Indeed, on the one hand, it is washed by the Baltic Sea, and occupies the territory of 14 islands. On the other hand, on the mainland there is a very beautiful Lake Mälaren, a meeting place for the capital's residents on weekends.
Not all areas will be of equal interest to tourists, but several of them are worthy of a visit for a traveler who has even seen a lot of things. In the heart of the city are two of the most famous districts of Stockholm - Gamla Stan, whose name translates as "Old Town", and Riddarholmen, a direct translation - "Knight's Island". They are considered the largest medieval centers in Northern Europe, were founded in the XIII century, and are well preserved to this day. This is what you can and should visit in Stockholm on your own, although if you take a guide to the company, the journey will become more informative and interesting.
Other districts of the Swedish capital are worthy of attention:
- Estermalm, a place of concentration of boutiques, large shopping centers, galleries;
- Stureplan, the area with the largest number of entertainment and cultural facilities;
- Södermalm, inviting designer lovers, bohemian boutiques and trendy cafes.
To save their own finances, a guest of the city can use a tourist card. True, with its help, only trips to museums and cultural events will become cheaper; there are no discounts in shops and boutiques with such a card. On the other hand, additional bonuses are free travel on public transport, a sightseeing tour of Stockholm, discounts on visits to some cinemas.
Immersion in Swedish history
The main attractions of Stockholm are concentrated in the Old Town. In the center of tourists' attention is the Royal Palace, as well as the Treasury and the Armory located not far from it. In the walking distance there are many beautiful temples and churches, small restaurants of national cuisine and cafes.
Picturesque old streets invite you to embark on a fascinating journey into the medieval past of the Swedish capital. Interesting architecture awaits guests not only in the Old Town, but also on the islands of Kungsholmen and Södermalm, as well as in the Norrmalm area. The houses here were built over the course of the 18th – 20th centuries, so one can observe how the development of architectural thought proceeded in one, separately taken city.
Stockholm museums
Another interesting page of the city's life is its museums. The inhabitants of Stockholm are proud of the presence of a large number of museums, as well as the treasures that they keep and regularly present to the public. The Nobel Museum is located in the Old Town, and this is understandable, because Stockholm is the birthplace of the famous inventor and industrialist.
A lot of museums can be found on the island of Scheppsholmen, especially the fact that two institutions are located in the same building - the Architectural Museum, which will tell about the most amazing achievements of Stockholm city planners, and the Museum of Modern Art, which has collected in its funds a valuable collection of paintings and sculptures XX century.
The main treasures not only of Stockholm, but also of Sweden, are kept in the National Museum, which occupies the territory on the island of Blasieholmen. This museum contains historical artifacts, collections of sculpture, paintings by Scandinavian and European masters, and a permanent exhibition of works by contemporary Swedish designers.
Stockholm for kids
The capital of Sweden will be interesting not only for adult travelers, but also for children. Nice walks in the Old Town, where amazing discoveries await around every corner. A trip to the island of Djurgården, where the largest skansen in the country ("open-air museum") is located, will leave wonderful impressions. You can see in miniature how people lived in these territories a hundred and two hundred years ago, get acquainted with their way of life, way of life, traditions and holidays.
The second most popular among children, guests of Stockholm, is the Vasa Museum, which displays a Swedish warship built in 1628. Adults can feel nostalgic about their happy childhood in the Junibakken Museum, its name does not mean anything to a Russian-speaking tourist, but the expositions tell about Astrid Lindgren's most beloved fairy tales.
