In November 1993, a new heraldic symbol appeared - the coat of arms of Syktyvkar, the author of the sketch was A. Neverov, who served as the chief artist of the city. Later, in the 21st century, several changes were made to the image that did not affect the essence. The main official sign of this Russian city is fundamentally different from its “colleagues” belonging to different administrative-territorial entities of the Russian Federation.
Description of the Syktyvkar coat of arms
In any color illustration or in the photo, the coat of arms looks very stylish and concise. This is explained, firstly, by the restrained color scheme of the new heraldic symbol, and secondly, by the technique of execution - all the elements are stylized, national tones and ornaments are used.
The most important thing is that the coat of arms of Syktyvkar consists of a shield that has a specific shape, the upper corners are straight, and in the lower part there is a sharpening, but not one, as in traditional French, but three, while the central one is slightly larger than the two extreme ones. The compositional structure is quite simple, the shield is divided into two fields, painted in different heraldic colors: the upper field is azure, the lower one is emerald. There are three elements on the heraldic symbol of Syktyvkar:
- a stylized figure of a golden bear in a den of the same color (it occupies part of the azure and part of the emerald fields);
- schematic, corresponding to national patterns, the image of a silver spruce (in a green field);
- a silver star reminiscent of traditional ornamental motifs (in an azure field).
The coat of arms is strongly influenced by the previous coat of arms of the settlement, which was called Ust-Sysolsk (until 1930). On the historical heraldic symbol there was an image of a bear, which is also in a den. But the modern symbol is interpreted differently - the bear acts as a talisman, a kind of guardian of the city's traditions.
By the way, the bear was also present on the coat of arms of the Soviet Syktyvkar, however, there he was shown leaving the den, which symbolized movement forward, development, improvement.
Color symbolism
The main official symbol of Syktyvkar is a stylish combination of five famous heraldic colors: gold, silver, azure, emerald and black. The gold color in the national culture was actively used in embroidery and ornamentation, it means the color of the sun, flourishing and splendor.
The silver color in the arms of Syktyvkar and in world heraldry is the color of snow, snow-capped peaks, purity and nobility.
