In the Stavropol Territory, this city is the most famous resort. On the other hand, the history of Pyatigorsk in its book of memory keeps one of the saddest stories associated with Russian literature. It was in this city that the genius poet Mikhail Lermontov died in a duel.
Ancient Pyatigorye
If we consider the history of Pyatigorsk briefly, several important periods can be distinguished. The first refers to ancient times, is associated with the first inhabitants of the local territories, then one can consider the development of the settlement as part of the Russian Empire, the Soviet period and the modern stage of the city's life.
Archaeological finds on the territory of modern Pyatigorsk and in its environs indicate that people have settled here since ancient times. Moreover, the choice of a place of residence was determined by them solely from the proximity to mineral springs, the benefits of which could be appreciated already in antiquity.
It is interesting that the modern name of the city can be found in written sources dating back to 1334: an Arab traveler writes about the area of Bish-dag (translated as "five mountains"). There were pages in the history of Pyatigorsk when guests from the East arrived far from peaceful purposes. So, the area had a chance at one time to become part of the great Golden Horde.
Then came the period of establishing ties with the Russian state. The active development of the territories of the Caucasus began in the era of Peter I. The main goal is to search for medicinal mineral springs, during this period the lands were annexed to the territory of Russia: part of Kabarda and most of Pyatigorye - in 1774; Big Kabarda and the right bank of the Kuban - in 1781. A new period in the history of these lands begins, associated with the Russian Empire.
Mount Mashuk and its sources
Officially, the year of foundation of Pyatigorsk is considered to be 1780, when the foundation of the Constantinogorsk fortress began. The main inhabitants of the fortress, soldiers, discovered mineral springs that had a beneficial effect on health. Near the fortress, a settlement was formed, where the soldiers, whose service life had ended, remained to live.
At the beginning of the 19th century, an era of prosperity began for Pyatigorsk: firstly, chemical studies of the water of mineral springs were carried out, and secondly, Alexander I signed the famous Rescript, a document according to which the importance of these territories and the need for their active development and development was recognized.
