One of the oldest Russian cities with a very long and rich history is located in the Vladimir region. Although, if you try to analyze the coat of arms of Suzdal, then, judging by the color palette, the symbols chosen for it, the way of their execution and placement, we can say for sure that the main official symbol of the city appeared not so long ago. It meets the traditions of medieval European heraldry, contains symbols that are considered quite common in world practice.
Description of the Suzdal coat of arms
A color photo or illustration emphasizes the brightness and saturation of the colors chosen for the main official symbol of this ancient Russian city. First, the French shield, the most popular in modern Russian heraldry, was taken for the coat of arms of Suzdal. Secondly, it is divided horizontally into two practically equal fields: the upper one is azure, the lower one is scarlet.
On the official symbol of Suzdal, there is only one character-symbol, this is a falcon. But scientists in the field of heraldry note that the position of the bird and parts of its body is fundamentally different from the traditional image of a feathered predator on the coats of arms and emblems of other cities and countries.
Characteristic features of the image of the Suzdal falcon:
- plumage of natural, natural color;
- turned to the right (for the viewer), according to heraldic traditions - to the left, while the bird's head is turned in the opposite direction;
- the wings are wide open and thrown back.
Among the few characteristic details made in the tradition of heraldry is the precious crown that crowns the head of the bird. It can be seen that the authors of the sketch took a serious approach to the selection of the color palette for the coat of arms. The scarlet color is traditionally associated with wealth, luxury, blood shed for the homeland. The azure color is used in the meaning of purity, nobility of thoughts and deeds, a symbol of justice.
History of appearance
Any description of the coat of arms of Suzdal begins with a mention of the great empress Anna Ioannovna. It was she who approved the first such image, and not for a settlement, but for the Suzdal Infantry Regiment. Its banners were adorned with the now famous emblem depicting a falcon, and this happened back in 1730.
Approximately 50 years later, this image was approved as the official symbol of the city of Suzdal, which was part of the Vladimir governorship.
During the years of building communism, the coat of arms with imperial symbols could not be used in official symbols, but returned in July 2003 by decision of the City Duma. It is included in the State Register, since it meets all the rules of heraldry.
