Riga is the largest city in Latvia. It is located on the banks of the Daugava. There are six administrative districts in the city. The historic streets of Riga are located on the right bank of the river. The oldest part of the city is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Central streets

The main streets were formed from the roads leading to the old settlements of Riga. They all existed already in the 15th century. Many of them had other designations. Some streets had familiar names even then.

In medieval Riga, artisans settled depending on the direction of their business. For example, butchers lived separately from shoemakers. The old streets of Riga have retained names dedicated to various crafts. The border of the Old Town is Valdemara Street and Vantovy Bridge. The port of Riga is located behind them. The central part is formed by the main boulevards and streets that run around Old Riga. The boulevards are separated by the City Canal and green areas.

There are three districts and three suburbs in the city. In addition to them, there are microdistricts that do not have clear boundaries. The center of Riga and the old town form the Central District, the area of which is approximately 3 square meters. km. Its border is Aleksandra Čaka Street, Tallinas Street and others.

Brivibas street

This street is considered one of the central streets of Riga. It has a length of about 12.5 km and starts from the Brivibas (Freedom) square. There is a monument to Freedom on the square. During the period of the USSR, the highway was called Lenin Street.

Brivibas is crossed by Gertrudes Street, where the Lutheran Church of St. Gertrude stands. Brivibas Street runs through the entire right-bank territory of the city. In its place, the Great Sandy Way existed many centuries ago.

Albert street

The open-air museum is Albert Street. The buildings there are built in the style of Riga Art Nouveau. The street was formed in 1901 and was named after Bishop Albert von Buxgewden. The houses were built by famous architects: Mikhail Eisenstein, Friedrich Scheffel and others. Real estate in the area of Alberta Street is considered the most prestigious and expensive in Riga.

Pushkin street

There is a street in Riga dedicated to the Russian poet Pushkin. It runs between the Academy of Sciences to the manufactured goods market. The street appeared on the map of the city a long time ago. Initially, Pushkin Street was called Smolenskaya. This is a quiet area of the city, the pavement of which is partially covered with cobblestones.
