Minsk is the main city of Belarus, its capital and an independent administrative unit. The city has a special status and bears the title of a hero city. The streets of Minsk have a complex and long history. They changed along with the city, which at different times was subordinate to Petersburg, Warsaw, Moscow.
Today Minsk is considered the largest political, cultural and economic center of Belarus. It ranks tenth in Europe in terms of population.

This beautiful city became the capital of the independent state of Belarus only in the early 90s. Many historical sites have disappeared from its streets. Minsk was rebuilt again after the war. Its current appearance was formed in the middle of the 20th century. The streets had different names and were renamed several times. These include Zamkovaya, Rakovaya, Krasnaya, Puteinaya, Lugovaya and other streets, as well as Yubileynaya square. Old alleys are Tverdy, Gorny, Kazarmenny, Mikhailovsky and others.
Currently in Minsk the total number of streets is 1290, including alleys and avenues. Urban development was formed in the middle of the last century, during the period of the USSR. The socialist appearance of many buildings harmoniously looks against the background of the urban landscape.
Famous streets of Minsk
The visiting card of Belarus is the Independence Avenue located in Minsk. Walking through this historical place, few people think about its appearance. The avenue appeared in the 16th century and was renamed several times. During the war, the Germans designated this street as Haupstrasse. In Soviet times, the main avenue of Minsk was laid on the site of the famous street, on which majestic buildings are located today. In 1952 it bore the name of Stalin, and later - Leningradsky Prospekt. In 2005 it became known as Independence Avenue. It is the main Minsk highway that crosses the city and goes from the center in a northeastern direction.
The avenue is approximately 15 km long.
October Square is considered an interesting place in Minsk. Here is the Palace of the Republic - a famous Belarusian landmark. The presidential residence is located in the Alexander Square. Other popular spots in the city are Victory Square, where the circus is located, and the Gorky Children's Park.
The Nemiga Street, named after the local river, is famous for its historical sites. During the period of heavy rains, Nemiga is flooded. The upper city denotes the area from Cyril and Methodius Street to Herzen. In this place, buildings dating back to the 19th century have survived.
