Tbilisi is considered the oldest city in Georgia. It occupies the bank of the Kura River and is famous for its historical and natural sights. As a city, Tbilisi was formed in the 4th century. He was repeatedly exposed to fires and rebuilt. The most interesting streets of Tbilisi are located on the territory of the old city.
Freedom Square
This is the main city square, despite its modest size. It regularly hosts political battles and demonstrations. Numerous old streets and Rustaveli Avenue lead here. In the center of the square there is a column with St. George - a project created by Zurab Tsereteli. This is a kind of landmark that can be seen from afar. From Freedom Square, you can start a walking tour of the central part of Tbilisi.
Shota Rustaveli Avenue
It is the most important street in the city. A walk along the long avenue can take more than one hour. Rustaveli Avenue is located between two squares and connects the old part of Tbilisi with the new one. The main city artery is decorated with beautiful buildings. There are souvenir shops, boutiques and shops along the street. Shota Rustaveli Avenue is located in the Mtatsminda district. This part of the city is full of interesting cultural sites. From the avenue you can turn onto the street that leads to the mountain and to the Pantheon of cultural figures of Georgia. The streets in Tbilisi are not very long. For example, the distance from the Rustaveli metro to Freedom Square is only 1300 m. The city takes no more than 30 km.
Old city
This is the oldest part of Tbilisi. Previously, it was surrounded by a fortress wall. Parts of the wall have been partially preserved on Pushkin Street and Baratashvili Avenue. In the old town, only a few streets have survived due to frequent earthquakes and unstable ground.
Avlabar
The ancient district of the city is Avlabar. It occupies the left-bank territory of Tbilisi. There is a version that the city began to form in this place. The development of Avlabar is chaotic. There are no long streets here. Short streets randomly merge into each other.
Famous objects of the Avlabar district: Metekhi Temple, Sameba Cathedral, Presidential Palace, Rike Park, ruins of Averatan Cathedral. The center of the district is Avlabarskaya square.
Sololaki
Sololaki belongs to the central districts of the city. This is the aristocratic part of Tbilisi, stretching between the Sololak ridge and Mount Mtatsminda. Famous sights are absent here, but the area is interesting for its everyday surroundings. The houses of merchants and beautiful gardens have been preserved on its streets. The main landmark of Sololaki is the city hall building.
