Description of the attraction
Throughout 1986, after carrying out some work in the building of the famous St. Nicholas Church, museum expositions were opened. An exhibition hall is located on the top floor of the building, and an exposition entitled "Folk Art of the Ustyug Land" was unfolded on the first floor. Today, this building houses the Museum of Ethnography. The richest fund collections of the museum provide an opportunity to see all the wide variety of folk art born in the Ustyug region of the 17th and early 20th centuries, namely: magnificent patterned weaving (heald, motley, elective, abusive), cube heel, embroidery, painting and woodcarving, punching and forging, ceramics.
Ustyug craftswomen have a unique skill in the business of weaving, which has always been distinguished by amazing color saturation and richness of ornament. Shoulder kerchiefs, aprons, shirts, towels, belts were decorated with unique patterns made with white, red threads or multi-colored garus. Yellows, blues, purples, oranges, greens and tones gave the fabrics a bright and pronounced decorative effect. The geometric character of the ornament is characterized by the technique of execution. The patterns were made up of crosses, triangles and rhombuses. Often, the composition included images of young ladies or gentlemen, horses, birds, horsemen, which served as a characteristic feature of the branded weaving of Veliky Ustyug. People have long believed that all patterns carry only good in themselves, which helps to protect from evil.
The graceful embroidery of the Ustyug craftswomen, who used in their work color and white intertwine, vestibule, cross and tops, was distinguished by a special artistic taste. In the patterned ornament of valances and towels, there are surprisingly beautiful floral motifs, as well as images of leopards, birds, deer and female silhouettes.
Numerous ways of decorating fabrics could be reflected in women's attire. The exposition presents women's festive costumes of the 19-20 centuries, which have preserved the traditions of Russian national dress, as well as the unique splendor of the true beauty that endowed every woman or girl. The most beautiful are the festive costumes, woven from semi-brocade and silk fabrics with headdresses adorned with numerous jewelry, pearl earrings and neck and chest ornaments. They were actively used: maiden dressing, coruna, crown, white shawl with a flowering bush made in gold, kokoshniks embroidered with silver and gold threads, mother-of-pearl dies and much more.
Artistic woodworking has also become widespread in Veliky Ustyug. Masters used volumetric, champlevé, through carving, later painted or painted. Almost all of the items presented are related to weaving, flax processing, sewing clothes - ruffles, spinning wheels, hacks, details of the weaving mill. Liqueur buckets, giant buckets and duck salt beetles were distinguished by an amazing harmony of forms, as well as a smooth silhouette. Gingerbread boards, which served as a form for baking gingerbread, testify to the high development of the culture of woodcarving.
The Museum of Ethnography has a corner dedicated to the interior of a peasant hut. Presented are: spinning wheels, holiday arches, cradle, chests, fences, guardianship, storage cabinets and the entrance to the golbets - all decorated with bright floral painting, made in a brush form and which is incredibly popular in the houses of peasants. The exposition also has a variety of pottery: krynki, pots, beer cups, tar vessels and numerous pots.
All the works that are widely represented in the Museum of Ethnography speak of the fierce wealth of Russian artistic culture, as well as the inextinguishable talent of the Veliky Ustyug masters.
Among other things, in the Museum of Ethnography you can celebrate such a significant event as a wedding. The newlyweds will take part in an amazing game action, which is traditionally held at every wedding. An exposition of a wooden hut in a wedding decoration, a wise matchmaker, Russian costumes, bright decorations - all this awaits those couples who decide to spend an unforgettable day at the Museum of Ethnography.
