Description of the attraction
Lake San Martin is located in the Argentine state of Santa Cruz. It is included in the list of the 10 largest lakes on the planet and is the deepest on the South American continent. The lake is located on the border of Argentina and Chile. Their unit in Argentina was named after the national hero in the struggle for independence, José de San Martín. Its total area is about 1010 sq. m., the depth reaches 836 meters. It is uneven in shape and has 8 sleeves. The Mayer River and several streams flow into the lake, and one river flows out - Pascua. Two glaciers O'Higgins and Chico also flow into the lake.
San Martin is surrounded by the unusually beautiful landscapes of the Pampas and a chain of snowy peaks. The local flora and fauna is striking in its wealth. More than a hundred species of animals and birds live here.
Lake San Martin is known for its clear waters. The color of the water changes from blue to green. It is home to a large number of trout. In this regard, sports fishing fans often organize competitions on its shores.
The tourist center of this area is the small town of El Chalten. There is everything for a comfortable stay of tourists: campgrounds, souvenir shops, information center, travel agencies. Tourists are offered excursions to different parts of San Martin: walks on the water, hiking tours around the lake for fans of eco-tourism, fans of extreme recreation are waiting for the picturesque snow-capped peaks of the Andes.
A separate attraction on the shores of Lake San Martin is the Nahuel Huapi estate. Horseback riding tours around the estate are organized for guests.
