Description of the attraction

One of the most beautiful and valuable architectural monuments of the city of Lutsk is the Peter and Paul Church, which is one of the most significant Catholic churches in Volyn. The church is located in the Old Town on the Cathedral street, 6.

The Peter and Paul Church was erected in the middle of the 17th century. and was part of a monastery founded by Jesuit monks. The cathedral at that time was an important spiritual, cultural and educational center of Lutsk. A Jesuit college, a library with a huge collection of books and a student theater operated under him.

The project of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in the then fashionable Baroque style was created by the famous Italian architect Giacobo Briano. In addition to the fact that the church was the dominant structure of the monastery complex, it was also part of the defensive system of Lutsk. Powerful walls, formidable towers with loopholes, a network of dungeons with wells allowed the building to withstand sieges.

At the end of the 18th Art. the Jesuit order was abolished, and the Peter and Paul Church, along with other monastic buildings, was transferred to the Public Education Commission. A few years later, the building of the temple was damaged by fire, and in the end it was given back to the Catholics. They were engaged in the restoration and transformation of the cathedral. After the restoration, the Peter and Paul Church acquired a new look. The interior of the cathedral was decorated with sculptures and stucco moldings, the walls were painted, one of its towers remained quadrangular, and the other became octagonal, it was this tower that became the highlight of the Peter and Paul Cathedral. But, despite the global reconstruction, the church still retained the authentic features of the Middle Ages.

After the Second World War, the temple was closed, and its premises were used as a warehouse, later it housed a museum of atheism. The cathedral was returned to the Catholic Church in 1991.

Surrounded by an aura of mystery and keeping age-old secrets, the shrine is the most attractive city attraction.
