Description of the attraction

The Mogilev Regional Drama Theater is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. Built in 1886-1888 by architect P. Kamburov and engineer V. Milyanovsky. The building is made of red brick, rectangular in plan with two "turrets" at the corners. The auditorium can accommodate 500 people.

The idea to create a theater in Mogilev came to the mind of the city public at the end of the 19th century. They deliberated for a long time and decided where to build it. We decided that the best place was on the square near the Muravyevsky square not far from Dvoryanskaya street. "The theater, built on this central place for the whole city, will provide the most convenient for residents of all parts of the city to visit, as well as the fact that the building planned for construction, in a very artistic style, will decorate the city in its central part."

On May 15, 1888, an amateur performance was premiered at the theater. Everyone wanted to visit the new theater, so tickets ran out quickly, and the performance was sold out. However, the Mogilev Drama Theater did not manage to acquire its own professional theatrical troupe right away. For a long time, numerous touring groups performed on its stage.

The first Russian theater on the stage of the Mogilev Drama Theater was organized by V. Kumelsky, a famous Belarusian actor who worked on the Mogilev stage from 1929 to 1939. Then he and the team he created were invited to work in Minsk.

After the war, the theater again had no permanent owners until 1954, when the Pinsk Regional Drama Theater moved to Mogilev. On October 29, 1954, the theater opened with the premiere of the play "Yaroslav the Wise".

Since then, on the stage of the Mogilev Regional Drama Theater, there have been many own and touring theater groups. Theatrical life went on with varying success, but the grateful Mogilev audience was always happy to meet everything new and fresh in the theater's repertoire.

At the beginning of 90 years, the theater was going through hard times. The economic instability in the country, the general decline in culture and morals did not contribute to the development of theatrical art. The theater building was also dilapidated and required major repairs. The building was closed for renovation, and the theater troupe performed in other premises and toured the country.

With the beginning of the new century, the best times have come at the Mogilev Drama Theater. The premises were opened after a long renovation, which was updated and supplemented with modern equipment. Young creative directors and actors came to the theater. Now the Mogilev Drama Theater enjoys well-deserved love and fame.
